In Summer 2016, our college was proudly renamed the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration (JHBC) shortly after the late longtime CSUSB supporter and nationally acclaimed business leader gave a $10 million endowment gift to the college. This was the largest single cash donation in the university's history. Annual return funds are expected to be used for scholarships, professional leadership experience, career support, new faculty, JHBC center projects, upgraded learning environments and other opportunities supporting college students, faculty and staff.
The college is housed in Jack H. Brown Hall, which opened Sept. 23, 1991 in recognition of Mr. Brown's years of involvement and support to CSUSB, surrounding communities and country. It was first building on campus to be named in acknowledgement of a significant donation - $1 million toward building enhancements.
Mr. Brown's deep commitment to his community and country is an inspiration to the thousands of students who study in Jack H. Brown Hall and graduate from a JHBC program. We are honored to help further and keep his legacy alive.
About Jack H. Brown
Mr. Brown, former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Stater Bros. Markets, was regarded as one of California's leading businessmen.
The native of San Bernardino started his career as a box boy at Berk's Market Spot in San Bernardino at the age of 13, following the death of his father. Later, he went on to study at San Bernardino Valley College, San Jose State University and UCLA where he majored in business administration. He also served on with the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy. In 1981, he took the held of Stater Bros. Markets and grew it into Southern California's largest privately owned and locally owned supermarket chains. Mr. Brown passed away in 2016.
Mr. Brown had a passion to invest in future business leaders through the establishment of student scholarships and was an avid supporter of CSUSB's Coyote Athletics. The college recognized him as the first recipient of the 'Arrowhead Distinguished Chief Executive Officer Award' in 1990. He received countless awards distinguishing him as the 'Inland Empire Entrepreneur of the Year', 'Business Leader of the Year', 'Retailer of the Year', and 'Citizen of the Year' along with the 'Semper Fidelis' award on behalf of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the 'White Rag' from the YMCA, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society award, and the Patriot award, the highest award the Congressional Medal of Honor Society can bestow upon an individual, and many, many more.
